Residents in the Tri-State area spend about four billion dollars (retail) per year on food. Surveys in our area say that anywhere from 50 to 80 percent of consumers want to buy more locally grown food. 90 percent of those who responded in the positive say that the reason they are interested in this is because they want to support local farmers and a regional economy. This seems to be a huge opportunity for agriculture in our area.

The last ten years reflect a greater interest in food issues than we have seen for three generations. This has been elevated even more due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak. However it seems that regional production is lagging far behind all of this potential demand; nevertheless, many producers report that times are still tough and marketing opportunities limited.

This SWOEFFA Chapter meeting will be an open discussion about what members can do as growers and food activists to help the agricultural sector evolve compatibly with this new and promising reality.
